Chapter Ten
JEN WANDERED ALONG Mountainviewâs Main Street aimlessly. She glanced in the windows of the shops she passed but saw nothing. She just kept playing and replaying that kiss she had shared with Alec...and the way he had almost sprinted away from her the moment it was over.
Does a kiss even count as a kiss if itâs under the mistletoe, and in front of your entire family? She groaned, low in her stomach, and rolled her head up, allowing the crisp winter sunlight to warm her face. It had felt like a kiss that counted. One that she had almost wished could continue... She swallowed. Evidently, Alec didnât feel the same way. An even worse thought hit her, and she snapped her eyes forward. Whatever Alec thought or didnât think about their kiss, he was under the impression that she was married. Who could possibly feel anything other than awkward kissing someone elseâs wife? Warmth seeped into her cheeks, and she reached her leather-gloved hands up in an attempt to cool them.
âExcuse me!â A cheerful voice called out to her. âYou couldnât tell me whereâs a good place around here to get a drink, could you?â
Jen frowned, turning in the direction of the voice. She saw a weary-looking middle-aged man, clad in a warm jacket and with a knitted hat pulled low over his forehead, approaching her from across the street.
âUm, sure.â She tried to erase her frown and smiled a welcome. âAre you new in town?â
âSomething like that.â The guyâs smile widened. âHey, arenât you...â He shook his head. âSorry, I bet you get this all the time, but you look a lot like that actress. Whatâs her name? Jennifer Leonard.â
Jenâs smile stretched, freezing uncomfortably in place.
âThatâs because I am her. That is, Iâm Jen.â She thrust her hand out to shake his. âPleased to meet you.â
âNo way!â The man grinned. âWow. Well, my wife is going to be so disappointed not to be here with me. Sheâs a huge fan. I donât suppose...â he glanced around, before pulling out a phone. âI donât suppose we could take a picture together?â
âSure,â Jen said, with a brightness she didnât feel. âIf you want.â She posed next to the man, obediently smiling when he instructed her to, and looking in the direction of the camera.
âSo about that drink. Youâre welcome to join me if you want. Join us, I mean. Iâm meeting my wife.â He held up his phone. âShe just texted. Some place called Flanaganâs?â
âThanks, but...â Jen shrugged. âI actually already have plans.â
âOh right. Sure. Sure you do.â
âI can tell you how to get there, though,â she said, willing her voice to sound enthusiastic. She gave him directions to the bar and promised to keep an eye out for him and his wife around town before wishing him a merry Christmas and waving goodbye. It wasnât until he was out of sight that she let go of the breath she had been holding. How Jack could enjoy this so much was beyond her.
