Chapter Ten

JEN WANDERED ALONG Mountainview’s Main Street aimlessly. She glanced in the windows of the shops she passed but saw nothing. She just kept playing and replaying that kiss she had shared with Alec...and the way he had almost sprinted away from her the moment it was over.

Does a kiss even count as a kiss if it’s under the mistletoe, and in front of your entire family? She groaned, low in her stomach, and rolled her head up, allowing the crisp winter sunlight to warm her face. It had felt like a kiss that counted. One that she had almost wished could continue... She swallowed. Evidently, Alec didn’t feel the same way. An even worse thought hit her, and she snapped her eyes forward. Whatever Alec thought or didn’t think about their kiss, he was under the impression that she was married. Who could possibly feel anything other than awkward kissing someone else’s wife? Warmth seeped into her cheeks, and she reached her leather-gloved hands up in an attempt to cool them.

“Excuse me!” A cheerful voice called out to her. “You couldn’t tell me where’s a good place around here to get a drink, could you?”

Jen frowned, turning in the direction of the voice. She saw a weary-looking middle-aged man, clad in a warm jacket and with a knitted hat pulled low over his forehead, approaching her from across the street.

“Um, sure.” She tried to erase her frown and smiled a welcome. “Are you new in town?”

“Something like that.” The guy’s smile widened. “Hey, aren’t you...” He shook his head. “Sorry, I bet you get this all the time, but you look a lot like that actress. What’s her name? Jennifer Leonard.”

Jen’s smile stretched, freezing uncomfortably in place.

“That’s because I am her. That is, I’m Jen.” She thrust her hand out to shake his. “Pleased to meet you.”

“No way!” The man grinned. “Wow. Well, my wife is going to be so disappointed not to be here with me. She’s a huge fan. I don’t suppose...” he glanced around, before pulling out a phone. “I don’t suppose we could take a picture together?”

“Sure,” Jen said, with a brightness she didn’t feel. “If you want.” She posed next to the man, obediently smiling when he instructed her to, and looking in the direction of the camera.

“So about that drink. You’re welcome to join me if you want. Join us, I mean. I’m meeting my wife.” He held up his phone. “She just texted. Some place called Flanagan’s?”

“Thanks, but...” Jen shrugged. “I actually already have plans.”

“Oh right. Sure. Sure you do.”

“I can tell you how to get there, though,” she said, willing her voice to sound enthusiastic. She gave him directions to the bar and promised to keep an eye out for him and his wife around town before wishing him a merry Christmas and waving goodbye. It wasn’t until he was out of sight that she let go of the breath she had been holding. How Jack could enjoy this so much was beyond her.
